Sullivan School
Circa 1918

A History Lesson from Sullivan School. . .
The little red schoolhouse that was once snuggled in a cluster of trees is now nestled inside Viking Sewing Center, and still carries on the proud tradition of education. Our classroom is in the actual space that was once Sullivan School. Remnants of the original structure can still be seen, as evidenced by the beautiful original brick work in the front hallway and tongue and groove ceiling in the classroom.
We are fortunate to have some original pictures and historical documents, and would welcome any information you might like to share about our very own "little red schoolhouse".

Have you noticed?
Our entry way features a beautiful mural featuring a painting of the Sullivan School building surrounded by the quilt block design, "Road to Paradise" because, as every quilter knows, the entry way to a quilt shop is always "the road to paradise"!
We’re proud that we offer comprehensive continuing education for our customers, a fitting tribute to Sullivan School!

Come see our Fairy Door...

Just push the button to light up the tiny sewing room to see the fairies at work..

We've come a long way...

It all started with Dale Houghtaling and a van. He traveled to sell and repair sewing machines out of his vehicle.

Our first store front was at Huron and Main in Ann Arbor. That building burned down in the early 70’s, and we relocated just down the street, to South Main.

In 1989 we moved to our present location on Jackson Road. Kris started working for his dad in 1981, and became part owner in 1996 when Dale passed away. In 2004, Kris and Doni became sole owners of the business, and started remodeling the building in 2005.
And now, we’re pleased to announce some more progress! We’ve changed our logo and our business name to Ann Arbor Sewing and Quilting Center. We feel that this better describes our broadening scope. Because you are receiving this newsletter, you already know that we offer much, much more than just Husqvarna Viking machines. Almost once a week, we hear “I didn’t know you had fabric”, “I didn’t know you sold cabinets”, “I didn’t know you carried thread”, “I didn’t know you carried Berninas”, “I thought you had to have a Viking to take classes here”. As you may have noticed, we have been using the tag line “We’re Ann Arbor’s Sewing Center” for approximately 2 years in preparation for this name change. All of the loyal Viking customers, please do not be alarmed. We will continue to carry the full line of Husqvarna Viking sewing machines, Sergers and Accessories.
Only our name is changing, not our store.
